Right Hand Man
Words by Nick Jackson, drawings by Baz Sellers. First published December 2017 by Powerpack Ministries.
This is my first real illustration project. It has been amazing. It has been hard work, its given me a lifelong fear of the words "bleed" and "slug" and taught me the real meaning of the phrase "steep learning curve", but nearly 400 hours of drawing later I'm sat with an actual copy of an actual book that I've actually illustrated, and I feel blessed. This project is about how I got from random sketches to an actual book, thanks to my trusty iPad Pro and Adobe Sketch. The ENTIRE book was illustrated in Adobe Sketch. All of it.
This is the first draft sketch for the main characters; the Right Hand Man, Billy, Asha, Mr Green, and Buster. I ended up making the noses a bit small, and softening up RHM a bit. He is meant to convey strength and security, hence why he looks like a rugby player going to an awards show...
This is the initial sketch for the 'reveal' page, where Billy meets RHM for the first time. The pink swirls are packing peanuts...
This sketch (the completed one is further down) is one of my favourites. Mr.Green is a grump, and the page just cried out for mad details. I pasted banned posters and those awful MS Word posters all over the place. And Mr.Green is about to eat a fly he's caught and I'm not sure anyone has noticed that...
The first sketch for the cover. And its awful. I'm glad we binned it.
Another sketch outside Greens..er.. Pastures. This one screamed out for pigeons. So many pigeons.
This is my other favourite page, where we meet Buster. I'm not sharing the final version, you'll just have to buy the book, but this was fun.
The final version of the Right Hand Man, with Asha and Billy. I think I got the kindly face right.
And this was the finalised 'logo' for the cover.
And this is the final cover. I'm chuffed to bits with this. As the story is about the Right Hand Man arriving as a gift I decided to follow that theme out onto the cover, so the book itself looks like a parcel. Plus I needed a way to get a giraffe onto the cover...
The finished pigeon page, and I have to say I love it. The pigeons make me giggle every single time.
And the final scene inside Greens...Er...Pastures, now with added pigeons. And a lifetime ban for Darth Vader.
These next pictures are the actual real-life book.
We kept the book quite secret, so when we knew the printers were getting to work we made a few teasers for social media...
Obviously, as it came out in December it would be remiss of me not to make some RHM-themed wrapping paper. With pineapples. Because... well... Im not sure why...
